10 Best Action Set-Pieces In Star Trek

6. Voyager Vs The Kazon Fleet; Basics Pt 1

Comparing TV Trek's set-pieces to the movies is perhaps a little unfair on a smaller budget but Voyager's second season cliffhanger, Basics, dropped in a killer sequence that the audience was teased earlier in the episode.

With a message from Seska tempting Voyager into a rescue, Janeway executes an audacious plan utilising the starship's abilities against a larger, combined, Kazon force. The crew and the audience are fully aware that this is 100% set up and it works so well because once everything is in place. Coupled with a rather explosive prisoner, it's not a good outlook for the Starfleet crew.

Basics' set piece is unusual because it flips between the interior and exterior of Voyager. The Doctor's sudden appearance in space is a bold move to induce humour at a climactic moment that doesn't quite hit the mark. While that's a misstep, Paris is lost in a shuttle and Voyager is outmatched by three Predator Class Kazon ships.

Ending with the ship captured after the self-destruct sequence is taken off line, the five minute attack ends with Janeway's ship pincered by its opponents. The crew on their knees, the Kazon had secured Voyager.

A Star Trek fan from birth, I love to dive into every aspect of the franchise in front and behind the screen. There's something here that's kept me interested for the best part of four decades! Now I'm getting back into writing and using Star Trek as my first line of literary attack. If I'm not here on WhatCulture then you're more than welcome to come and take a look at my blog, Some Kind of Star Trek at http://SKoST.co.uk or maybe follow me on Twitter as @TheWarpCore. Sometimes I force myself not to talk about Star Trek.
