8. Invader Zim
Invader Zim may have been short lived but time has been kind to the wacky science fiction series because due to its popularity and merchandise sales, it has gained cult classic status. In fact, the show’s unexpected cancellation may have even helped the appreciation for the show. And it does pack an impressive punch considering the vocal performances and animation were vastly superior to other cartoon shows airing at the same time.
It’s one of the very rare instances where the protagonist is the main villain. Zim sets out to conquer Earth with a manner of arrogance, eccentricity and narcissism, and yet we feel compelled to him as a lead character. The colour palette is generally made up of drab textures and unappealing shades which give the picture a grimmer aesthetic.
It was a different style for a kids animated show, one which took risks and never played it safe. Despite its cancellation, the unusual nature of Invader Zim has made it one of the more unique animated shows.
