10 Best Brooklyn Nine-Nine Episodes
5. Greg and Larry
As stated in the introduction, the show doesn't focus only on funny characters, but sometimes a shockingly compelling dramatic narrative. The episode Greg and Larry is a prime example of how the writers can do a great job of creating a persuasive segment that - although humorous - primarily focusses on the narrative pay off of a serious conflict.
The episode is a continuation of the previous outing that saw the reveal of Figgis' inside man being Anderson, a person whom the squad had enlisted the help of. They escape from the hospital where the traitor was holding Holt at gunpoint and hide in Rosa's apartment. From there they try to figure out a way to diffuse the situation.
The dramatic tension is high, as the culmination of this story could have significant ramifications for the Nine-Nine, and feels integral as it acts as the payoff to the Pimento storyline that started four episodes prior. It's a chapter that shows how the series has great over-arching narrative potential.
The climax has to be one of the most cathartic, but heart-breaking moments of the series, as the squad are successful but find that Holt and Jake have to be placed into witness protection. This narrative carries over for a three-part period next season.
