10 Best Cliffhangers Of Modern Doctor Who

4. Heaven Sent

Doctor Who Gallifrey Heaven Sent
BBC Studios

What can be said about this perfect Doctor Who episode? The episode is all about the Doctor grieving for the death of his companion Clara while a mysterious entity attempts to extract information from him. After billions of years, the Doctor manages to break free of his prison, arriving back on his home planet Gallifrey and looking for retribution.

The cliffhanger at this episode is every bit as good as what comes before it, with Peter Capaldi bring a darker, more vengeful characterisation of the Doctor to life. But it's his revelation as to the question that had been asked throughout the season- who is the hybrid?- which is the real stunner. For as the Doctor reveals, it is he who is the hybrid. It is a stunning revelation that brings extra weight to the message he sends to the timelords on Gallifrey- "tell them I know what they did and I'm on my way."

Unfortunately, the final episode of the season is 'hell bent' on undoing all these great story threads including a woeful explanation of the Doctor's revelation. It's a great shame, as it does take away from the fascinating and absorbing episode that Heaven Sent was.

While he likes to know himself as the 'thunder from down under', Luke is actually just a big dork who loves all things sport, film, James Bond, Doctor Who and Karaoke. With all the suave and sophistication of any Aussie half way through a slab, Luke will critique every minute detail of films and shows from all eras- unless it's 1990's Simpsons episodes, because they're just perfect
