10 Best Episodes Of True Detective

2. Who Goes There

True Detective
HBO

The fourth episode of the first series and quite possibly one of the greatest episodes of television ever conceived. True Detective had lured us in with a near perfect script and cast, now it was time to show us some serious, straight up action.

As the investigation keeps hitting dead ends and false leads, it is rapidly becoming a desperate situation so Cohle hatches a plan to go rogue. With Cohle now on 'leave' and only Hart for backup, they enact a plan to infiltrate a biker gang that Cohle had links to while working in special ops some years prior, hoping that a member will lead them to their main suspect in the murders, Reggie Ledoux. With Cohle both undercover and under the influence, what follows is a nerve rattling, night time raid.

Featuring a six minute, continuous, single take shot, a sequence that earned the show two Emmy Awards, Who Goes There is a stunning piece of technical and creative televisual genius. As the cameras rolled and the actors hit their first marks, make up teams were rushed in and out of shot unseen, to apply blood, sweat and damaged clothing before the camera returned to the actors, all in one take.

It’s breathtaking stuff. As the two leads have taken leave from the investigation there will be no backup if the operation goes south. Surrounded by armed bikers and drug dealers, the snatch plan begins to fall apart when the situation quickly descends into a neighbourhood riot.
