10 Best Ever TV Soundtracks

3. Les Revenants (Mogwai)

Glaswegian post-rock band Mogwai have created many great soundtracks for film, but their strongest outing to date has been for the French television series Les Revenants. A drama that is unremittingly bleak, mesmerisingly slow and achingly beautiful merited an impressive score, and Mogwai provide it with aplomb. The title theme, with its toy-box-chimes-meets-cello-meets-minor-piano, is like drukQs-era Aphex Twin sleeping alongside Philip Glass. It perfectly matches the themes of innocence, death and childhood that hang over the series like an impenetrable mist. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MP9evk0f7Qg Elsewhere, the band's droning and echoing guitar work and minimalistic drumming generates more atmosphere than should be allowed, while synths are employed so subtly that you'll wonder why anyone ever felt the need to use them more forcefully. It is a stunning score, and is a huge part of the show's success.
