10 Best Football TV Series To Stream While The Season Is On Hiatus
1. Sunderland 'Til I Die
Available on: Netflix
All these others series are fine, but if you're really missing the regular cut and thrust of the run-of-the-mill weekly fixture list then there's nothing better than tagging along with the agony and the ecstasy (but mostly agony) of a big club on the downward slide and how their hugely passionate fanbase deal with it.
This fly-on-the-wall series follows Sunderland following their relegation from the Premier League. Expecting to be in the fight to come straight back up, the Black Cats instead plunged into another relegation battle with cameras following everything that went wrong and its effects on the Mackems who live for the club.
That feeling of everything turning to disaster as your club is in freefall is one that most football fans can relate to sooner or later. You'd have to be a Magpie not to sympathise. But it makes for compelling TV the way that no fairytale success ever could.
Best of all, the series has just returned for a second season of tragicomic ups and downs. Following the optimistic change of ownership at the end of the last season, we're back with Sunderland chasing promotion back to the Championship in the 2018/19 season. So we can look forward to the triumph and tragedy of making two Wembley finals and then losing them both.
And maybe when this is all over we'll be looking back this time next year and watching Sunderland 'Til I Die Season 3 tell the story of the season getting suspended with the Black Cats just outside the playoff spots on goal difference.
