Okay, they're not the most serious characters in the show, nor have either had a massive effect on the race for the Iron Throne, but that doesn't mean they aren't important characters to have around. Gilly is the source of Sam's sheer determination. He does things now that the old, feeble Samwell simply wouldn't do, like take a bloody pummelling before standing up to face the two Night's Watch brothers threatening Gilly. But it's not a case of 'man saves damsel in distress,' as Gilly is a streetwise wildling who knows pain and strife. They teach each other things in differing ways, and compliment each other well, adding a little bit of joy to the otherwise stoney-faced world they live in. They're lovely and happy now, but it's hard to get too excited about them as that usually means a death sentence.
