10 Best Lost Plot Twists

7. Michael Is Ben's Spy

Lost Jack
ABC

Given that Ben was able to earn some freedom by divulging the identity of his agent on Widmore’s freighter, and that the confession took place offscreen, it was almost certain that the spy would be a familiar face. Sure enough, the unveiling of the spy’s identity proved to be another memorable twist, as Sayid and Desmond encountered Kevin the deckhand, a man revealed to be none other than Michael, who hadn’t been seen since he departed from the Island having betrayed his friends at the end of Season Two.

Due to Michael’s long absence and the legacy of his treacherous behaviour, his return to Lost was a massive moment and left questions in the air regarding why he had continued to work for Ben, not to mention how his fellow castaways would respond to him. Michael’s journey in Season Four delivered on the promise of his reappearance, following his attempt to atone for his sins by saving his fellow survivors from Widmore’s mercenaries, and culminating in his death while delaying the explosion of Keamy’s bomb.

Michael had been one of Lost’s most complex characters, and his surprise return brought additional emotional weight to the freighter storyline, as well as providing further evidence of Ben’s calculating intelligence.
