10 Best Lost Plot Twists

4. Michael's Killings

Lost Jack
ABC

The fact that Michael’s reappearance towards the end of Season Two was too good to be true was hardly a surprise. But who could have predicted that the caring father would go so far as to murder Ana Lucia in cold blood in order to free the captured Ben? And just when it seemed as if things couldn’t get any worse, poor Libby arrived at the scene of the murder to fetch some blankets for her picnic with Hurley, earning herself two bullets from Michael in the process.

This horrifying moment revealed just how morally compromised Michael had become in his quest to protect his son, and made it clear that he’d sold his soul while a prisoner of the Others. In the long term, Michael’s guilt would prove to be one of his defining characteristics until (and after) his own death, driving him to suicide attempts and poisoning his relationship with Walt. The survivors’ responses to the deaths were deeply poignant, particularly Hurley’s last moments with the mortally wounded Libby and his eulogy at her grave.

Lost had already proven on multiple occasions that key characters could die in brutal, tragic circumstances. But to kill two at once, particularly as neither had managed to fully achieve closure or happiness, was a particularly shocking move, which stands as one of the show’s most memorably upsetting twists.
