10 Best New TV Shows Nobody Is Watching
1. Deadloch
Sometimes it seems as though the TV crime drama is about as played out as anything can possibly be - and then a show like Deadloch comes along. Created by Kate McLennan and Kate McCartney, this Tasmania-set comedy-mystery is one of the freshest creations in recent memory.
From the outset, there’s not a lot to give you that suggestion. The setup is fairly familiar; small town with a secret, unsolved murders, city cop and country cop forced together in order to get to the bottom of things.
But the presentation, writing, and depth of characters on Deadloch goes beyond what you’ll see on the vast majority of cop shows and comedies alike. Few programmes have ever got the balance between plot and humour as dead on as this one, with genuine big laughs coming from natural places.
From the characters - an unusually well observed collection of small town weirdos - to the performances, particularly Kate Box’s surprisingly deep and melancholic turn, this is singular TV that deserves way more attention, and should send McLennan and McCartney (already cult names in their native Australia) to another level.
