8. Kal Penn - Kevin Venkataraghavan
Oh, Kevin, you poor thing.
Kevin is a psychiatrist who Robin is sent to by the courts, and he eventually elects to stop seeing her because he has feelings for her. The two then date for a while, with Kevin even going as far as to propose to her, but in the end they break up when they realise their life goals don't match.
He's kind of a tragic character, living in the shadow of Robin's former boyfriends, Ted and Barney, and always a touch out of place with the gang. But thanks to the sublimely talented Kal Penn (best known for the Harold and Kumar film series), he ends up being one of the later seasons' most endearing and genuinely sweet characters.
Kind, honest, and very funny, Penn is at once lovably weird and sweet, being the best boyfriend possible to Robin and a breath of fresh air to the show. He deserved a better send-off, but what we got was still amazing.
