10 Best Pike Moments In Star Trek Discovery
7. PIke And Number One
The second season's fourth episode, An Obal For Charon, opens with the arrival of Rebecca Romijn's Number One on board Discovery. She greets Pike with a warm smile and they get right to business.
This scene plays perfectly. Despite this being the first time that the audience is encountering this incarnation of the character, the chemistry between Mount and Romijn makes us feel as though we've watched them on screen for years.
There is a lightness to the scene, despite the fact they are discussing grave topics. That said, it opens with a knowing wink to the audience. They discuss the issues with the holographic communicators installed on Enterprise, something which had of course been absent from the '60s incarnation.
Pike remarks that they look like ghosts and Number One snorts - she had told the Chief Engineer he would say that.
They stop in the mess hall and after amusing Pike further by her choice of dinner, Number One discusses Spock's inquiry with him. She admits (while not admitting) that she has circumvented Starfleet protocol to get further details on the science officer's case, something Pike both admonishes her for and thanks her for taking the initiative to do.
She further remarks that she has not wasted her time while the Enterprise has been locked in Spacedock, something that comes back in Such Sweet Sorrow.
The scene is short, but it displays both characters and their relationship to each other perfectly. Pike maybe be new to us, but he's an old hand in Starfleet.
