10 Best Stand-Up Comedy Specials Of The Last Decade On Netflix
3. Louis C.K. 2017
It's been a long fall from grace for Louis C.K. since his 2017 stand-up special. It was later that year the New York Times published a story about five women accusing Louis C.K. of sexual misconduct. Louis C.K. admitted to his wrong doing and after ten months away from the stage, made a controversial return to comedy. Louis C.K.'s behaviour was abhorrent.
This comedy special was not; in fact, it was some of C.K.'s best work, at a time when he was widely considered the funniest person in the industry. It is understandable that Louis C.K. has been blacklisted by many comedy fans, however if this special is being assessed on quality alone, it undoubtedly deserves a place high up on this list.
Louis C.K. delivers a masterclass in social analysis, addressing topics such as abortion rights, suicide, and how the Christians won the world. C.K. also shares some great stories about parenting, discussing the story of Achilles with his daughter and his reluctant enjoyment of the film Magic Mike.
On top of all this, C.K. added some brilliantly clever voices and characters to his routine in this set, an element of stand-up that he has rarely done during recorded specials. For a man who, at the time, was the King of Comedy, his impressions demonstrated yet another skill C.K. has in his comedy tool-box.
Whether or not Louis C.K. should return to comedy is a discussion for another time, but Louis C.K. 2017 is unquestionably an excellent piece of stand-up comedy.
