5. Part Four - When They See Us

When They See Us
Netflix

At only four episodes long, Netflix's dramatisation of the infamous 1989 Central Park Five case, whereby five black teenagers were found guilty of a crime they didn't commit, works more like a long film than a piece of TV.

Still, it's the final part that stands out the most as a riveting slice of television that drives home the inadequacies of the justice system, and the time stolen from some of these men. Primarily this ep focuses on 16-year-old Korey and his twelve years in prison, played with such haunting restraint by Jharrel Jerome.

Through his performance it's hard to not see the damage done to this kid; the life that he was deprived of, and the needless misery he was subjected to. It's heartbreaking to watch - especially during the harsher prison scenes - but important to put into perspective how the failure of the justice system tangibly effects not only the direct victims, but wrecks the life of their family and friends.

Of course, that pain gives way to a bittersweet and uplifting ending, one which caps off another excellent Ava DuVernay project.
