6. Girls5eva - "Alf Musik"
Peacock’s new sitcom about the revival of a flash in the pan girl group is created and primarily written by Meredith Scardino, but the majority of reviews have focussed on executive producer Tina Fey, and it’s not hard to see why. If you enjoyed 30 Rock or Kimmy Schmidt, you’ll be instantly won over by the tone and gag rate of this delightful comedy.
In episode three, the reformed girl group look to give their comeback a shot in the arm by hiring their old songwriter, the titular Alf Musik. A glorious parody of the Swedish songwriting industrial machine, Alf is played with charming detachment by Stephen Colbert, and he gels magnificently with the main cast.
Like the other Fey-related shows before it, Girls5Eva perfectly balances character work and laughs. It leans foremostly on the latter, but can bring an episode around to a meaningful ending without ever making the transition clumsy. Here, the women drop the star songwriter in solidarity with Dawn, who wants to give their music her own spin to better represent their experiences as women.
Still, it’s the laughs we’re here for, and this episode provides them in spades, courtesy of Colbert and the fantastic four women in the lead roles.
