10 Best TV Show Cold Opens Ever

6. The Office - Fun Run

Brooklyn Nine Nine I want It that way
NBC

Like those which have come before, The Office US was famous for its clever implementation of cold opens to quickly let new viewers grasp the characters, set up for the coming narrative, and give returning watchers a great short to giggle at. While there were plenty of awesome opens that could stand atop the rest, it's the dramatic intro to Fun Run that takes the cake.

This debut episode of season four opened on Michael Scott, as he seemed somewhat disillusioned with life. He talks about not getting the job in New York and his "domestic bliss" with Jan, which clearly isn't as picturesque as he's claiming.

As Michael tries to convince you that his life is going great, which it isn't, he is met with a potent metaphor for his car crash of an existence, as he knocks Meredith down with his vehicle after claiming to feel "very blessed".

The whole segment is such a perfect glimpse into the show and its leading character. Michael's blissful ignorance and inability to hide the disappointment he feels in his life is all you need to understand where he's at.

Plus, Meredith's injury becomes a significant factor in this two-part episode, meaning that it works as a quick joke and plot set-up.
