Star Trek: The Original Series was a groundbreaking show in many ways. It dealt with topics of its era sensitively and showed what is often described as TV’s first interracial kiss, between Kirk and Uhura.

Actually Hot Summer Night, You In Your Small Corner, I Love Lucy and Movin’ With Nancy all feature earlier interracial kisses.

However, with things like this, being first is not what mattered; people thinking you’re the first to be is. For a show as major as Star Trek to be so inclusive broke down so many barriers, both with the American public and for television.

Star Trek is not the kind of show which needs awards to secure a legacy. Still, it definitely deserved them.

It was nominated for 13 Emmys in its run, including one for Outstanding Drama and three for Leonard Nimoy’s turn as Spock. However, it never won a single one, although that hasn’t stopped it from resonating with us all so many decades later.

This was somewhat rectified by Star Trek: The Next Generation winning a mighty impressive 18 Emmys, though all of them in technical categories such as Outstanding Sound Mixing, Outstanding Costume Design and Outstanding Make Up.
