While we wait for season three of The Witcher, which still doesn't have an official release date, we will have a new prequel miniseries to tide us over.

Just like the original show, The Witcher: Blood Origin is also based on Andrzej Sapkowski's book series and its plot is set roughly 1,200 years before the exploits of Geralt of Rivia. It will depict the legendary Elven civilisation right before its demise, as well as the origin and creation of the very first Witcher. it will also explore the events leading up to The Conjunction of the Spheres.

Declan de Barra, who wrote for the original show and has worked on titles like The Originals and Iron Fist, is set to be the showrunner, with the main cast including the likes of Sophia Brown, Laurence O'Fuarain, and Michelle Yeoh.

This seems to be another step in creating an entire cinematic universe around The Witcher lore, with Netflix confidently putting their faith and resources into the franchise. In addition to this six-episode series, we already have an animated feature film (The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf came out last August), with another one in the works, as well as a family-friendly animated series that was announced last autumn.

It's safe to say that there will be a wealth of content to choose from for all The Witcher fans.
