10 Characters From 24 You Totally Didn't Appreciate The First Time
1. Edgar Stiles
Where better to begin proceedings then by celebrating everyone's favourite CTU alum?
Edgar made his debut as an analyst alongside the likes of Chloe O'Brian. From the opening of day 4 he was positioned as the lovable yet out-of-his-depth fan favourite. His stumbling naivety and occasional lack of situational awareness allowed him to connect with large portions of the fan base while maintaining a persistent level of anxiety that his incompetence would hinder their beloved characters down the line. It was his love-hate back and forth with Chloe that conditioned the audience to label Edgar as the hard working friend who had found themselves working above their station, out of touch with work place etiquette.
Edgar found he was elevated to a series regular having won over both the writers and the audience alike. A member of CTU with seemingly pure beliefs and an unflappable good nature - something depressingly lacking by this stage off the series - was a breath of fresh air to fans. It was a shame then, that just as the character was explored more deeply and his family trials and tribulations fleshed out, that he was killed off. His death coming in true Edgar fashion, it struck an emotional chord with viewers as he and Chloe locked eyes, realising the tragic inevitability of the moment.
A standout performance from acting great Louis Lombardi, combined with the arc taken by Edgar during his relatively short tenure with the show , have only served to promote the character's status. A grounded, deeply-rooted, flawed individual made him relatable and believable.
It isn't until the whirlwinds that are seasons 4 and 5 are over that fans can fairly process and appreciate what a noble, sincere man he was. Loyal, trustworthy, flawed yet graced with innocent and sincere intentions, Edgar resonates with fans more so as time passes.
