10 Classic TV Characters Who Weren't Added Until Later Seasons
9. Saul Goodman - Breaking Bad
Bob Odenkirk's smooth talking criminal lawyer would become such an important part of Breaking Bad, yet he wasn't even added to the show until a full season and a half in.
Saul Goodman was introduced in the eight episode of the second season. Walt and Jesse need a lawyer, and so they turn to the corrupt Saul Goodman, who they know from the super cheesy late night commercials and billboards all around town.
Adding Bob Odenkirk to the series would turn out to be one of the best decisions creator Vince Gilligan ever made. Known mainly for his work in comedy as a writer on Saturday Night Live and the creator of Mr. Show, Odenkirk brought a great sense of dark humour to the series, a welcome addition as things got more and more bleak.
But Goodman wasn't simply a joke delivery system. Even if at first he was just Walt and Jesse's lawyer with a pretty memorable and goofy personality, the character would grow into one of the most interesting of the series. Odenkirk was originally only a guest star, but he later became a series regular and stayed with the show until its last season.
By the end of the fifth season, we're as invested in what happens to Saul as we are with any other character, and seeing how much his life is screwed up by Walt is just so profoundly sad.
