The 'Stan is Dead' theory is the most popular American Dad theory, and one with a high probability of being true. As discussed by Emily Carson in her Cartoon Conspiracy series, the theory centres around the events of the classic episode Rapture's Delight (Season 5, Episode 9).

By the end of the episode, Stan helps Jesus save Francine from the Anti-Christ, but at the cost of his own life. In the closing moments of the episode, Stan is seen being escorted to his own personal Heaven. As he opens the door, the audience is taken back to the start of the episode as if the rapture and end of the world had never occurred.

Many believe that the events of the episode are canon and that Stan is really dead, with the events of the series from the end of Rapture's Delight onwards taking place in Stan's personal afterlife. This provides an explanation the crazier episodes such as the Christmas battles and the events that feel less grounded.
