10 Cult TV Shows Taken Too Soon
4. Reaper
With a pilot episode directed by Kevin Smith, hopes were high for this comedy drama. The plot revolved around a young man named Sam who was born as part of a deal with the devil. As part of the bargain, the devil then made Sam hunt down escaped demons and act as Hell’s bounty hunter, all the while holding down a day job at a DIY store and hanging around
with his two friends. The first season aired around the time of a writer’s strike which killed any momentum as it was split into two parts. A second, reduced episode season was made, but didn’t get to end its run, despite featuring Armie Hammer in an early role and Ray Wise as one of the finest screen portrayals of Satan.
The show had a terrific mix of comedy and drama (the DMV office acted as a portal to hell), but still never found an audience on the CW. Perhaps had it aired even a few years after its initial 2007 run, the network’s more forgiving policy would have seen Reaper get the ending it deserved.
