Lord Baelish has proven to be a master manipulator, using his gifts to achieve his goals in quite deceptive manners. Like great politicians, he plays all sides perfectly, and never makes his true nature clear to anyone other than those he trusts, which is no one. The man called Littlefinger has seen his station in life rise considerably from his beginnings as brother magnate and Master of Coin for King Robert Barratheon, all through backstabbing and beguiling from the shadows. His relationship with Lord Varys always provided some interesting moments, as the two men understood each other very well when no one else did. Petyr's role in the death of King Joffrey appears to be partially motivated by his feelings for Sansa, hoping to recreate the love he felt for her mother, but with a man like Littlefinger you can never be sure of his ambition. At any rate, his marriage and subsequent murder of the batsh*t insane Lysa Arryn has made him Lord Protector of the Vale, his strongest position of influence yet. And there's no reason to think his aspirations stop there, since Baelish is driven by a hunger for power. He's a character with much depth (although he could stand to lose the Christian-Bale-as-Batman voice) and trying to decipher his motives is a weekly adventure that fans of the show don't wish to end anytime soon.
