Bill Nighy's name was regularly at the top of desirable Doctor Who guest star lists before his uncredited cameo as Dr Black in Series 5's Vincent and the Doctor. It looks like he only did it because the episode was written by his friend, Richard Curtis, but he almost stepped aboard the TARDIS as the titular Time Lord himself when he was approached to play the Ninth Doctor.
