10 Doctor Who Characters That Should Return

5. Kate Stewart

Eighth Doctor
BBC

I'm just going to say it. Kate Stewart was wasted by Steven Moffat. Her arrival in The Power of Three showed such promise for the future of the show. Not only was it a reminder of the UNIT days of the Third Doctor's tenure, but also a lovely tribute to The Brigadier, with Kate Stewart carrying on his legacy.

Sadly, I found Moffat's writing of the character was less to be desired, and she fell from grace time and time again, as he depicted her not as a scientist leading UNIT into a better age of problem solving, but just someone who was stricken by the militaristic mindset of blowing things up. Honestly, her father would be ashamed of her. I know he had a tendency of wanting to do things in a blunt military manner, but he gradually learnt from The Doctor and tried different horizons in solving the situation in front of him.

On top of that, we knew from Kate in The Power of Three that The Brigadier had taught her in the ways of The Doctor, so why was she constantly resorting to such extreme, callous methods of defeating her enemy, thus doing something that would make The Doctor (and her father) disappointed?

From what I can gather, she is used much better in Big Finish, and I'm glad that is the case, and that her character can be explored in a way that's faithful to her initial establishing, and that also pays tribute to The Brigadier. Honestly, I feel Chris Chibnall needs to give her another tackle, as he wrote her right originally, and it would also allow UNIT to return (as opposed to being shut down for the sake of a dumb Brexit joke).
