10 Doctor Who Companions Who Just Couldn't Stay Away

10. Martha Jones

Played by Freema Agyeman First appearance: Smith and Jones (2007) Last appearance: The End of Time, Part Two (2010) As first encounters with the Doctor go, Martha Jones' was truly out of this world. Quite literally, too! As a medical student in training at the Royal Hope Hospital, Martha first stumbled across the mysterious Time Lord when he was posing as a patient to investigate the otherworldly shenanigans of a blood-sucking Plasmavore disguised, of all people, as TV's very own Anne Reid. Brilliant. The Tenth Doctor wasn't the only extra terrestrial playing detective, though, because before he knew it, a platoon of Judoon - think humanoid space rhinos armed with laser guns - had transported the entire hospital to the Moon where Martha joined forces with the Doctor to lead the intergalactic mercenary police to their alien convict. After a taste of the adrenaline inducing action, Martha decided to take a temporary break from her studies and stepped aboard the TARDIS for "just one trip" which soon escalated, as trips in the TARDIS often do, into many more. Her stint in time and space wasn't all plain sailing, though. Amongst meeting Shakespeare, being kidnapped, interrogated by the Daleks in the sewers of New York and posing as the Doctor's reluctant maid in a 1913 war torn England, Martha developed strong romantic feelings for her new best friend which went painfully overlooked by the man himself, who was still struggling to come to terms with the loss of his beloved Rose (more on her later). But if there's one thing you can call Martha Jones, it's dedicated. When she and the Doctor became trapped in 1969 at the hands of the terrifying Weeping Angels, she got herself a job in a shop to financially support them both, and she even singlehandedly walked the entire Earth to pass on messages of hope throughout the enslaved human race during the Year That Never Was (the Doctor was too busy being incarcerating by the Master. Typical). Seriously though. What a gal. Giphy1 Gif Her turbulent tale of unrequited love eventually proved to be too much for her, though, as she chose to bid adieu to the Doctor at the end of Series 3. Since then she's made multiple returns to the series, most notably in Series 4 when she was seen to be putting her timey-wimey experiences to good use as a fully fledged UNIT medical officer. She even managed to fit in a stint in popular spin off Torchwood around this time, too. Where does she find the time!? In her last, albeit brief, appearance to date in The End of Time, Part Two, fans discovered that Martha had left the confines of military organisations to become a freelance Earth defender alongside her new bea, Mickey Smith. So as the girl who spent the majority of her time in the TARDIS feeling second best to Rose, she ultimately ended up being married to Rose's ex-boyfriend. There's got to be a deeper meaning in there somewhere. Anyway... Until the next time, Martha Jones.
