10 Failed Doctor Who Movies (And Why They Didn't Happen)

1. Sony's Collaboration With The BBC

Sony had an absolute nightmare in 2014, suffering a data hack which resulted in an enormous amount of confidential emails being brought to the public's attention.

These included messages sent between high-profile Hollywood executives like Amy Pascal (co-chairman of Sony Pictures at the time) and movie producer Scott Rudin. Hell, even a copy of the Spectre script was leaked. But, by far, one of the most interesting discussions revolved around the notion of a Doctor Who movie.

In a January 2014 email sent by Andrea Wong (a higher-up at Sony Pictures Television) to Michael Lynton (former CEO of Sony Pictures), it was said that the BBC Television team was facing pressure from BBC Worldwide to make a Doctor Who movie, but that the creative team behind the show didn't want to go down that route.

The emails also mentioned an eight-year timeline for the Doctor Who brand, and that a film would "certainly" be included in that timeline. Lynton then said that he wanted to meet with the showrunners, while Wong expressed doubt that the project would go ahead anytime soon.

Technically, there are still a couple of years left on that eight-year timeline, so there's a very, very slim chance that this movie could still happen between now and 2023. Don't get your hopes up though.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
