10 Game Of Thrones Characters We Never Saw Die
6. Brynden Tully
Last Seen:
In Season 6, Episode 8, refusing to flee the besieged Riverrun to travel north with Brienne and help his niece and nephew recapture Winterfell and instead choosing to fight the Lannister army, self-deprecatingly suggesting that he'll "probably make a fool of myself". Cutting to after the battle, an anonymous Lannister soldier tells Jaime that Brynden has been found dead.
Could He Still Be Alive?
The recapture of Riverrun by the Lannister and Frey armies feels partly like a plot to tie up why the Tullys and the Blackfish are unable to help with the fighting in the North, something to ensure that the odds are stacked heavily against Jon during the Battle of the Bastards.
Now that the fight in the North has switched to one between the living and the dead, the living side are always going to have the odds stacked against them, though, and could use all of the help that they can get, or at least a few more characters to play cannon fodder when the deaths start stacking up in the final season.
The show made a point of reminding audiences that the Blackfish had been present at its greatest bloodbath, the Red Wedding, and managed to make it out intact. Could this be prompting us to imagine that he might have done the same here? We never see his body and it's only through second- and third-hand observation that we know he's dead.
In the books, meanwhile, Jaime captures the castle and the Blackfish escapes by swimming under a portcullis and into the river, so there's every possibility that this happened here too.
