10 Great TV Shows Starring The Cast Of Friends
9. Dirt
In a post-Friends landscape, the urge to reinvent yourself as an actor is an easy one to understand. That’s certainly what Courtney Cox did with Dirt, an FX comedy drama in which she portrayed the often unsympathetic Lucy Spiller. In taking on the role of an unscrupulous gossip mag editor, Cox did everything in her power to take a new direction.
At the time, Dirt wasn’t much of a hit - it was a curiosity at first that didn’t do great in the ratings and lasted only two seasons. And while it’s no masterpiece, it’s certainly worthy of rediscovery. It’s unashamedly brash and melodramatic stuff, set in the world of trash journalism but somehow featuring assassination attempts, drugs, and car chases.
Its key strength is Cox, whose acerbic performance as Spiller is a bold one. Dirt is decidedly adult (if not especially mature) and Spiller fits in with the in-vogue trend of the protagonist antihero. While she doesn’t reach the depths of a Walter White or Tony Soprano, she’s given some pretty heinous stuff to do, which Cox attacks with relish.
It’s refreshing to see TV that doesn’t take itself too seriously, and if you’re after a pacy romp, you can do a lot worse than the thoroughly enjoyable Dirt.
