Fullmetal Alchemist is everything you'd want and expect from an anime series.

It presents a thoroughly riveting storyline that can have a serious tone to it whilst still leaning into its own comedic nuances.

The plot focuses on two brothers - Edward and Alphonse Elric - who have recently lost their mother and their father has long since abandoned them. The two conduct a dangerous alchemic ritual in an attempt to raise her from the dead, but it fails and leaves their bodies disfigured. In order to amend this, they search for the sorcerer's stone to restore their beings.

The narrative is utterly entrancing, with a nice flavour of steampunk and a meticulous understanding of alchemy. Plus, despite being male-oriented, the series ushers in plenty of strong supporting female characters to further amplify this intense tale of war, genocide and government corruption.
