10 Greatest Animated TV Shows Of The 2000s

5. Spongebob Squarepants

Samurai Jack
Nickelodeon

Before Spongebob became about shocking gross out visuals and mean-spirited storylines, it was a genuinely smart cartoon, filled with sweet adventures about everyone’s favourite yellow sponge and his various companions. This was not just a show for children - the characters, storylines and hidden adult humour appealed to the older demographic as well.

The world building of Bikini Bottom is brilliant. The homes of each character are unique and very fitting to the setting – Mr Krabs’ anchor for a home, Plankton’s literal chum bucket, Patrick’s rock etc. And with boats on wheels for vehicle transport and colourful nautical imagery dotted all over the city, you'd almost feel you're underwater with them.

Moreover, the characters all have distinctive and individual personalities that blended well together as one, from the brainy Sandy Cheeks to the sarcastically dry-humoured Squidward. With this, we were provided some of the most enjoyable undersea tales - ones which always highlighted the joy of friendship, exploring and simply venturing positively through life.

It's the upbeat tone and eye-popping creativity that made Spongebob Squarepants one of the greatest animated shows ever.
