10 Greatest Time Travel TV Shows Of All Time

1. Doctor Who

Quantum Leap
BBC Studios

Honestly, the fact that Doctor Who has been captivating audiences since 1963 is enough to garner it the number one spot on this list. The loose plot structure of an alien travelling through time and space has allowed the show to go anywhere and do pretty much anything it wanted.

And while Doctor Who abandoned the concept of the "pure historical" (a serial or episode that operated as simply a period piece of sorts, without any science fiction or fantasy elements) decades ago, the show frequently explores different historical time periods as a backdrop for various alien-related shenanigans.

And over the past forty years, they've gone pretty much everywhere (including, for some inexplicable reason, Victorian England for what feels like several thousand times). While the show's exploration of time may not be as intellectually rigorous as history buffs may hope for, with the emphasis firmly paced on the science fiction side of things, its capacity for experimentation and creatively have undoubtedly ensured that the show will likely be on the air in some form or another for several more decades.
