7. Sam & Diane - Cheers
The first onscreen on-off relationship most people remember, Ted and Dianes constant sexual tension and will-they-wont-they interactions over five seasons was a talking point for every Cheers fan. They broke up and reunited many, many times until Diane finally left the bar, her job and Sam for good in the season 5 finale I Do, Adieu. Without Ted and Diane there would be no Ross and Rachel (more on that later), no Ted and Robin and no Carrie and Big. This is due mainly to the fantastic chemistry between Ted Danson and Shelley Long, which is why its so difficult to see Diane walk out of that bar at the end of season 5. After they embrace one final time, Diane leaves Boston forever as Sam tells her to have a good life. Weve seen them break up and get back together before but there was a finality this time; something that hits the viewers and Sam at the same time. The Sam and Diane romance was so prevalent in the show for its first five years that it was as difficult to see it end as it presumably was for the characters involved, but all we could do was sit and watch. Have a good life, indeed.
