...while learning essentially nothing about their mother. The show delivers what it promises - the story of how Ted met his kids’ mother - but she features in the story of his life for what amounts to an insultingly short amount of time.
Obviously this is a contrivance required by the plot. As soon as he meets the mother, the show loses its purpose. It doesn’t have to end then and there, but the solution to the puzzle was what kept the majority of fans watching long after its peak.
But the idea of Ted telling this tale to his children and barely featuring the title character just seems cruel. It’s worth noting that the mother died in 2024, meaning the kids weren’t even teenagers when they lost her. They’d most likely love to learn a bit more about their mother, what she was like as a younger woman, the good times she and their father spent together.
Instead, they’re treated to yet another tedious story about Lily’s struggling art career, or an interminable story about Barney and Robin’s wedding and subsequent divorce. Thanks, dad!
