10 Hugely Underrated Fantasy TV Shows From The Last Decade

3. The Almighty Johnsons (2011-2013)

TV3

The Almighty Johnsons €“ pun intended €“ is a New Zealand series about four brothers who are the reincarnations of Norse gods and must find the reincarnation of Frigg to restore their full divine powers. It's crude but undeniably funny and is surprisingly internally consistent, as the quest for Frigg is the driving force of all three seasons.

The reimaginings of the gods are also amusing; special mention goes to Thor, envisioned as an unhinged farmer wielding a tiny hammer. The appeal of The Almighty Johnsons lies with its characterisation of the Johnson brothers, all of whom undergo significant character development throughout the series.

Fan favourite and serial womaniser Anders, played by The Hobbit's Dean O'Gorman, perhaps changes the least as his arc comes to a head at the beginning of season three, but elder brother Mike is almost unrecognisable by the series finale. The humour might not be your cup of tea, but it's a well-handled premise with a satisfying conclusion.
