10 Incredible Stephen Colbert Moments That Prove He’s Perfect For The Late Show

3. Nailed 'Em: Buffet Crime

Some of the funniest Colbert Report segments don't even have anything to do with politics; they just explore weird little slices of life that you wouldn't see on anywhere else on television. One of those bits was called Nailed 'Em, an exaggerated and sarcastic look at a person who was "nailed" for some ridiculously minor crime.

With segments like Nailed 'Em, the editing is at least half of the reason it's so funny. Colbert's narration is over the top and the editing is ridiculously frantic, mocking all those cable news shows that try to make the day's serious events into a Michael Bay movie. It even has all the mandatory ominous background music and an overdramatic reenactment. Colbert gets incredibly into the idea of nailing these minor perpetrators and is always on the exact wrong side of the debate, in this case coming down hard against a dude whose crime was sharing some of his food at a buffet.

Colbert and his writers explore the silliness of being so strict about the law, as well as the Colbert character being way too into justice and locking people up. There's also a great running gag of Colbert weirdly interacting with the interview subjects even though he's obviously just doing a voiceover. Hopefully Colbert can manage to bring over silly segments in the spirit of Nailed 'Em to The Late Show.
