Nobody does dark humour quite like us Brits, and the sheer wealth of deliciously depraved comedy that has come from these shores just goes to show that whilst we may enjoy rainy afternoons and cream-teas, we're also quite partial to the darker side of life.

Perhaps it's due to our natural penchant for sarcasm and good-natured - yet genuinely venomous - barbs, but there's something about the way we Brits do dark humour that truly sets us apart from everywhere else in the world. We're not simply content with being gross and foul for the sake of it, instead opting to fill the screen with all manner of monstrous characters that we all secretly wish we could be to some extent.

So if you're partial to something more bitter than sweet, then we've got ten wonderfully worrisome comedies for you to sink your teeth into. Be they experimental sketch-shows, or atypical sitcoms about sociopathic beauty salon owners, there's bound to be something featured here today to appeal to whatever perverse and unsavoury taste you may crave.

Although you'd best make sure to put granny to bed before watching any of these at the family gathering...

10. The League of Gentlemen

It would be an actual crime to not include this in a list of essential black comedies from the United Kingdom, so here we are singing its praises once again.

First broadcast at the tail-end of the nineties, The League of Gentleman pushed the sketch-show format into new and disturbing territory by giving its cast of oddball characters a serialised arc which their numerous paths cross-over in strange and exciting ways. This sense of cohesion gave its characters added depth, and made the setting of Roystone Vasey feel like a living, breathing community - one that just happened to be home to all manner of perverts and murderers.

Across its four series, the show pushed the boundaries of taste to its limits and its impact on British comedy can still be felt to this day, with the likes of Little Britain, The Mighty Boosh, and Crazyhead owing more than a pound of flesh to this much-loved cult classic.

Endlessly re-watchable and highly quotable, the rabid fanbase for this show is still going strong and there are even talks of yet another revival series in the works which is a real testament to its enduring popularity.
