10 Incredibly Dark British TV Comedy Series You NEED To Watch

6. Monkey Dust

BBC

This is the only animated show to appear on this list, but don't let that fool you because Monkey Dust is anything but family-friendly.

A subversive, tabbo-broaching, and often-times depressing sketch-show that never shied away from the most heinous of subject matter, Monkey Dust left many disturbed, but even more completely enamoured with it.

Its distinctive mix of animation styles and often sombre lead-ins to sketches gave it an eerie atmosphere, one that was often heightened by the grim nature of its content. Even when at its most hilarious, the show can still get under your skin in spectacular fashion, making it a viewing experience like no other.

Beneath the grime, however, Monkey Dust had a keen sense of social commentary, in which it took aim at 'Cruel Britannia' and painted the country as a bleak landscape in which the government cares not for its people and roaming gangs spread fear in every corner.

A total of three series were produced in its lifetime, but sadly the show ceased production after its co-created Harry Thompson passed away. A truly saddening loss to the world of British comedy, but those three series of Monkey Dust are a wonderful legacy to leave behind.
