Flowers seemed to come and go in an instant upon release. It didn't quite capture the attention of the mainstream, but those who saw it were immediately drawn into its bittersweet world and are likely still haunted by it.

Centering on the eccentric Flowers family, this comedy-drama hybrid chronicles their exploits as their lives are uprooted by various misfortunes, their own lingering insecurities, and long-unchecked mental illnesses that slowly bubble to the surface.

Now on paper, this doesn't sound like a barrel of laughs, but where this show really shines is in its ability to blend humour with hard-hitting subject matter, and never in a way that feels disingenuous to either component.

Lead by the perfect pairing of Julian Barrat and Olivia Coleman, Flowers is a uniquely bleak tale that seeks to move as much as does amuse. With several scenes throughout that will reduce even the most stoic of people to blubbering messes.

Whilst Flowers is a more poignant and emotionally devastating story, it never loses sight of its black-comedy leanings and as a result, it is a show like no other. Although you'd better get a box of tissues ready for this one, because you're gonna need them.
