10 Most Inglorious TV Character Deaths (After The Actor Left The Show)

9. Chef - South Park

South Park If ever there was a show that would give a character an inglorious death, it would be South Park. For the majority of the early years of the series, Stan, Kyle, Kenny and Cartman would go to Chef for advice, which they would likely receive in the form of song. Voiced by soul legend Isaac Hayes, the character served as a mentor of sorts to the kids, and considering the degenerate idiots he was dealing with it's fair to say he never really had a chance of making a difference. Aided by a short production time and a fast turnover of episodes, South Park is always able to keep the controversy meter topped up by commenting on hot-button topics in double-quick time. One of these hot topics was Scientology, a religion which Hayes followed. Lampooning anything €“ religion included €“ had long been a staple of the series, but the episode "Trapped In The Closet" proved to be a step too far for Isaac Hayes. It took aim at both the religion itself, as well a number of its most famous followers, including John Travolta and perhaps most notably Tom Cruise. Despite his involvement in other religion criticising episodes, this depiction of Scientology was apparently a deal breaker for Hayes, who decided to quit the show. The creators of the series, Trey Parker and Matt Stone were then faced with the task of creating an exit for the character of Chef, and if there's one thing that South Park doesn't do its dignity. Chef was leaving and it wasn't going to be pretty. The exit occurred in an episode named "Return of Chef", with Chef's lines provided by recordings of Hayes which were edited together to give the impression of a new recording €“ something the show acknowledged within the episode itself. The story sees Chef brainwashed into being a child molester by a 'fruity little club' (read: Parker and Stone's opinions on Hayes and Scientology) before suffering a brutal death. Just to show you how brutal, he's struck by lightning, falls from a great height, and then ripped apart by a bear and a lion. He soon returns in the form of Darth Chef, complete with a new voice. The character hasn't appeared since and considering Isaac Hayes death in 2008, it's unlikely that he ever will.
