10 Lost Doctor Who Episodes We'll Never See

9. Season 27

Whilst technically not a missing episode like the rest of the serials on this list, the original 27th season of Doctor Who is still lost all the same. After the show was axed in 1989, besides 1996’s TV Movie, Doctor Who would not return until 2005’s revival. But, from a production point of view, a twenty-seventh season was still underway.

Over Season 25 and 26, stories like Remembrance of the Daleks, Silver Nemesis, Battlefield, Ghost Light, and the Curse of Fenric, references are made towards the Doctor’s higher power and set groundwork for a larger storyline which would have come to head in Season 27.

This storyline was partially developed into a Big Finish Lost Stories season. However, the original premise was for the Doctor to get a new companion after training Ace to be a Time Lord on Gallifrey, and could have seen the Doctor regenerating at the end.

Whilst the ideas are still slightly vague as to what could have happened and how many seasons this would have panned out over, the aptly named “Cartmel Masterplan” was the basis of novelisations in the 1990s by script editor Andrew Cartmel. This plan comes to a head especially in the novel Lungbarrow, which dove deep into the back story of Gallifrey and The Doctor. And for those wondering, yes, it was as controversial as the Timeless Child.
