10. There Was Almost A Seventh Friend

Though it's tough to imagine the core line-up of Friends any other way, NBC bosses originally felt that the cast's youth might alienate older demographics, and decided that the group needed an older friend to play off.

Creators David Crane and Marta Kauffman consequently came up with an additional seventh friend called Pat The Cop, an older man (and police officer, obviously), who would dispense advice to the friends and give them a uniquely seasoned perspective to bristle up against.

But after writing an episode featuring Pat, Crane and Kauffman decided it wasn't working, and despite the part reportedly already being cast with an unknown actor, begged NBC brass to reconsider.

Thankfully they did, and the show's perfect sextet remained firmly in tact.
