Jodie Whittaker took her final bow as the Doctor in The Power of the Doctor, being forced to regenerate after a battle with the Master. Everybody expected her to transition directly into Ncuti Gatwa's version of the Time Lord, as he'd already been announced as her replacement.
However, the show took a different path - one that took it somewhere it had already been.
David Tennant was revealed as the actor playing the Fourteenth Doctor, over a decade after he stopped regularly portraying the Tenth Doctor. This reveal came as a surprise to everyone, and now the entire fanbase is chomping at the bit to find out why Tennant has returned.
Though not for a full series, Doctor Who will be back on our screens in 2023 for three specials in November. This is partly to celebrate 60 years since the show first aired, but mostly because fans will burn Russell T Davies' house to the ground if he doesn't tell them why Number Ten's face is back.
