3. The Passage - Season 3, Episode 10

Battlestar Galactica The Passage
Universal

When the food supply gets contaminated, the fleet needs to make a harrowing journey.

Right from the start, the sudden off-screen contamination of their food is a dramatically weak contrivance. We aren’t even given any exposition explaining what happened. The food supply has been tainted and that’s it. This makes the crisis difficult to invest in.

As a result, the fleet needs to pass through the titular passage but the problems here also feel forced. Why do the ships have to stay in the middle of the storm for so long? Why can't they just jump in and jump out before the light disorients them? Don’t they have sunglasses?

There is also Kat’s sudden mysterious past to contend with, which had never been hinted at before. Turns out she was actually a drug courier before the Cylon attack in the miniseries. It’s a retroactive backstory that doesn’t really add much.

Finally, with Baltar on the Basestar, we are bombarded with trying to be poetic and mythical philosophizing. It can all sound like non stop gibberish with characters finding deep meanings from indecipherable lines of dialog.

This is definitely a passage we’d gladly FTL jump over.
