Sam's dagger was involved in an enormous moment for Westeros which could shape the entire future of the continent. Not only did the dagger allow Sam a return to civilisation to warn everyone that the White Walkers were alive, it was a definitive sign that the ice demons could be killed by dragonglass. He discovered the world's greatest threat and the cure all in one go. Now Sam's en route to Oldtown for training to become a maester, so that's hopefully a path towards forging more weapons to defend the imminent onslaught. Sam The Slayer may be a craven, but he may have just inadvertently saved the world.
