Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - Season 5, Episode 26

Star Trek Deep Space Nine's fifth season ended with a bang. The station was overrun by the joint Cardassian-Dominion forces and Starfleet abandoned the sector. After a heavy firefight, the USS Defiant and the IKS Rotarran punch their way through enemy ships before cloaking to escape.

There are a few minutes left in Call to Arms at this point but it is that final shot that is the true stand-out moment. It also led to many fans trying to pause their VHS copies of the episode because, for the first time, a huge fleet of Starfleet and Klingon ships were gathered together on-screen.

The moment stands out for a few reasons. First, there is the sheer number of ships in the shot. It would be one of the last times that model-work was used on the series, in combination with CGI. Second, while the Defiant pulls up and turns around, there are other Defiant-class vessels in the task force. This was the first time that any other such ships were shown.

Lastly, this was a true fist pump moment for fans. This was the fleet that had been promised by the Battle of Wolf 359, though never actually seen. Here, fans' prayers were answered. Now, play the game of count the ships!
