10 Most Pointless American Horror Story Characters

With nine seasons down, and three seasons more plus a spin-off on the way, American Horror Story is showing no signs of stopping.

In all this time we’ve been introduced to plenty of unique characters. Some have been based in reality, most have been fictional. Some have been heroes, but plenty have been villains. More often though they fit somewhere in the middle of those several points on the strange Venn diagram that American Horror Story creates.

Not all of these constructs are created equally though, and for a series that tends to jam pack its seasons with as many characters as possible there are going to be some stinkers.

Whether it’s missed potential or an idea that just never got off the ground, these are the ones that just didn’t work.

A vampire child is, objectively, a great idea. Killer children are also great ideas. Too many media properties to count have put these two concepts to the test and shown that the formulas simply work. So, put killer vampire children in American Horror Story and you should have a recipe for success. But then there’s Max Ellison and his kiddie vamps.

When we first meet him, Max has a bad case of the measles thanks to his anti-vax mom. So, in an act of desperation, he is turned into a vampire. Ultimately this leads little Max to develop a tiny god complex, turning his whole class into vampires and convincing them to feed off their parents and teachers.

Eventually, lonely and hungry, the pack heads to the Hotel Cortez for sanctuary. Instead of getting help, they are trapped by the Countess in the dead-end hallway and treated to an unceremonious offscreen death from Ramona Royale.

There’s a profound missed opportunity here in that we never get to see the Max’s pack at their full potential. More than that though, the child vampires are never more than a C-story happening outside of any main character’s concern. Once they finally do make it to the Hotel where the main action is, they’re immediately killed off.
