10 Most Shocking Betrayals In Star Trek
6. Seska - State Of Flux
Seska was brilliant. Now that that's out of the way, we can talk about what a wasted opportunity her character's arc became.
Martha Hackett simply devours any scene that she is in. In hindsight, the idea that Seska was a traitor is laughably obvious. At the time, it was jaw dropping. It seemed as though her loyalty to, if not Starfleet, then Chakotay was without question. A member of the Maquis crew, she joined Voyager somewhat reluctantly. Had the writers left her as a Bajoran freedom fighter, unable to follow the edicts of Starfleet, then what a story that could have been
Instead, they chose to make her a Cardassian spy. This was shocking on more than one level. First, the Bajoran crewmember was a Cardassian. Talk about a twist! Second, as a Cardassian, she would have been well able to overtake the Maquis ship with minimal effort - yet she remained. While this may simply have been a case of retconning, this could have been a case of allowing the character to bide her time.
Seska actually manages to take Voyager away from Janeway. True, she does it with the help of the Kazon Nistrim, but she pulls it off with such style that it is stunning. Her abrupt and disappointing death left fans wanting, including Hackett herself. Thankfully, she was brought back in holographic form for Worst Case Scenario and then finally through temporal nonsense in Shattered.
Truly, Seska was one of the great villains of Voyager - and it came out of nowhere.
