There were a ton of moments viewers never saw coming, but this one comes close to taking the cake for the most unexpected.
Sometimes at a point in a movie or a show you find yourself questioning if what you're seeing is actually happening. That's what the moment where Hannibal takes a buzz-saw to Will's head as Jack begs for mercy does.
Watching Hannibal start to carve Will's skull like a pumpkin on Halloween is upsetting to say the least. It's even more hard hitting when you consider that this could have been the end for him. Hannibal is a show that relishes in subverting its audiences expectations, and there is no better subversion than killing off your protagonist midway through a season.
Even though deep down we know that he isn't going to die, as his story clearly wasn't finished yet, that still doesn't soften the pain of seeing this moment unfold. The audience sees Will go through a lot during the series, but it never gets any easier to watch him suffer.
